Why entrapment protection exists

An automatic gate moves a heavy object through a space people and vehicles may pass through. Entrapment protection is the set of functions intended to reduce crushing and trapping risks during gate movement. Everything on this page describes what qualified people evaluate to keep those protections present and functioning; no gate system eliminates risk.

The DASMA and UL 325 concepts

The DASMA technical data sheets describe the framework that UL 325 sets out. A few concepts are worth understanding at a high level:

  • Classes I–IV. UL 325 defines vehicular gate operator classes by intended application. An operator may be marked for more than one class. This site never asserts which class a specific site is.
  • Protection Types A, B1, B2, C, and D. These name the kinds of entrapment protection: Type A inherent (built into the operator), Type B1 non-contact photoelectric sensors, Type B2 contact edge sensors, Type C inherent force limiting, and Type D constant-pressure actuating devices.
  • External means must be monitored. Any external device used for entrapment protection must be monitored — the operator checks that it is present and reporting.
  • Two independent means for identified entrapment zones. The material describes a minimum of two independent entrapment-protection means, and the same type of device may not be used for both.

Two independent means and monitored external devices

DASMA states that two independent means of entrapment protection have been required in each entrapment zone since 2000. Its current Table 32.2 summarizes minimum quantities by gate type and direction of travel, including the horizontal-swing exception when no entrapment zone exists in one direction. Separately, beginning in 2016, external photoelectric sensors and edge sensors used as entrapment-protection means are monitored devices and must be connected and operational for the operator to work as intended.

The acceptable means depend on the gate category, the operator's qualified devices, the manufacturer's instructions, the identified entrapment zones, and the application. It is therefore inaccurate to say that every gate requires both a photoeye and an edge. User-activation controls are located according to the applicable UL 325 provisions, including the six-foot separation and reach-through restriction summarized by DASMA.

Vehicular-gate systems and pedestrian access

The January 2025 DASMA summary states that the vehicular gate operators covered by its gate-safety tables are for vehicular gates, not for directing pedestrians through the moving vehicular-gate opening, and that separate pedestrian access is provided where pedestrian use is likely. The September 2025 revision of UL 325 added requirements for pedestrian gates and pedestrian gate operators; that change does not make a vehicular-gate opening a pedestrian route.

ASTM F2200 as the construction standard

ASTM F2200 is the construction standard for automated vehicular gates that UL 325 references and that the Tucson Fire handout points to. It addresses how the gate itself is built — for example, exposed rollers, gaps, and screening are construction conditions evaluated against that standard. This site describes these conceptually and cites the DASMA sheets; it never reproduces the standard's text.

Fire-access requirements, where they apply

When a security gate crosses a required fire apparatus access road, the Tucson Fire Department handout describes: fire code official approval; an approved means of emergency operation; an approved Knox-brand key switch for an electronically operated gate; electric gate operators listed in accordance with UL 325; gates intended for automatic operation designed, constructed, and installed to comply with ASTM F2200; the gate and emergency operation kept operational at all times; and the person in possession of the premises responsible for maintaining required access. The handout also describes at least 20 feet of unobstructed width and 15 feet of vertical clearance for a required fire apparatus access road, subject to the handout's provisions for approved security gates. Entrapment protection is intended to reduce the risk that an automatic gate crushes or traps a person or vehicle. An external protection device that is monitored means the operator continuously checks that the device is present and reporting correctly. The DASMA technical material describes the requirement that external means used for entrapment protection be monitored. Because the operator depends on that check, a fault, disconnection, or missing required input can alter or prevent normal operation according to the model — some operators will refuse to run or will only run under restricted conditions when a monitored device is not reporting. How many entrapment-protection means is an automatic gate supposed to have?

Does my gate need a Knox key switch?

Only the fire code official and the fire jurisdiction for your property can determine that.
