UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Gate Safety Crosswalk

1. What these two standards cover

UL 325 is the safety standard for door, drapery, gate, louver, and window operators and systems. Its scope for gate operators covers the equipment that drives and controls the gate — the operator construction, electrical safety, control placement, entrapment-protection requirements, and test methods. The current edition is Edition 9, published September 15, 2025, as a binational UL 325 / CAN/UL 325 standard.

ASTM F2200 is the standard specification for automated vehicular gate construction, operation, and testing. Its scope covers the gate panel itself — geometry, material strength, aperture sizes, and construction requirements — rather than the operator or control system. The current edition referenced here is ASTM F2200-21 (Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction).

The two standards are complementary: ASTM F2200 governs what the gate is made of and how it is built; UL 325 governs the operator that moves it and the entrapment-protection means that must be present.

2. ASTM F2200: gate construction

ASTM F2200 specifies the physical construction of automated vehicular gates. Key requirements include:

  • Aperture geometry. Openings in the gate panel must not allow entrapment of body parts. F2200 specifies the acceptable aperture dimensions for horizontal slide, swing, and other gate types.
  • Structural strength. The gate must withstand the loads imposed by the operator, wind, and anticipated impacts without failure that creates an entrapment hazard.
  • Protrusions. Exposed ends of rails, posts, and other members must be capped or treated to prevent impalement hazards.
  • Warning signs. ASTM F2200 requires that warning signs be posted on each side of the gate in the language of the area of use.

ASTM F2200 does not specify the operator, control system, or entrapment-protection devices. Those are governed by UL 325 and the operator manufacturer's instructions.

3. UL 325 entrapment-protection types

UL 325 and DASMA TDS 353 define four entrapment-protection types. A provider selects acceptable types based on the gate category, operator listing and instructions, identified entrapment zones, and installation requirements. The same device type may not count for both required means in the same direction.

4. Minimum quantities by gate type

DASMA TDS 353 Table 32.2 lists the minimum number of entrapment-protection means required per direction of travel, by gate type. These are minimums; the operator listing and instructions govern the acceptable types and may require more.

5. Two-means history and the 2016 monitoring boundary

DASMA states that two independent means of entrapment protection have been required in each entrapment zone since 2000. The 2016 date marks a separate and later requirement: beginning in January 2016, external photoelectric sensors and edge sensors used as entrapment-protection means became monitored devices. After that date, operators manufactured to the updated UL 325 standard must continuously verify that monitored external means are connected and functional. A missing or non-functional monitored input causes the operator to halt or restrict movement to constant-pressure operation.

These are two independent requirements. Meeting the two-means minimum does not satisfy the monitoring requirement if the selected means include external photoelectric or edge devices manufactured or installed after the January 2016 boundary date.

A standards publication date does not retroactively govern existing installations. Existing-installation obligations depend on the applicable jurisdiction, adopted code edition, permit or approval, enforcement action, and listed equipment instructions.

6. Vehicular-operator usage classes

UL 325 defines four vehicular gate operator usage classes. The class is determined by the application and the anticipated user population, not by the gate type or operator power level alone. An operator must be listed for the class that matches the installation.

An operator listed for Class I is not automatically suitable for a multi-family or commercial gate. The installer and the operator manufacturer's instructions govern which class applies to a specific installation.

8. NRTL certification record

UL 325 is developed and published by UL Solutions (UL LLC), an independent safety science organization. For operators tested and certified to UL 325, the certification mark on the product is issued by an OSHA-recognized Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

With the publication of the UL 325 / CAN/UL 325 binational standard in September 2022, Intertek became the accredited NRTL for UL 325 certifications in the United States and Canada. Operators tested to Edition 8 or Edition 9 that carry the Intertek (ETL) mark are certified to the current binational standard. Operators carrying the UL mark were certified to an earlier edition under UL Solutions' previous certification program.

UL Solutions and Intertek are separate organizations. Neither is affiliated with DEKRA. To verify a specific operator's certification, use the Intertek product directory for current listings and the UL Product iQ database for earlier editions.

City of Tucson and Pima County materials both list repair or replacement of a fixed motor or transformer with one of the same type and rating in the same location as permit-exempt electrical work. Added electrical, structural, photovoltaic, generator, excavation, driveway, or other scope can still require review. The issuing office confirms what applies to the property and written scope.

For fire apparatus access road gates, the Tucson Fire Department publishes a handout specifying gate requirements including width, standpipe access, operation, and signage. Pima County unincorporated properties use the fire jurisdiction having authority or the designated responding fire department — confirm the fire authority for the address.
